English, Circa. 1745
A particularly fine and unusual George II mahogany armchair of exceptional colour and patina, distinguished by its wonderfully sculptural form, superb carving and highly unusual shape
The beautifully shaped and sweeping back rail is supported by finely executed fluted Doric columns and two intricately pierced and carved splats.
The boldly drawn cabriole legs are richly carved at the knees with stylistic acanthus leaves, terminating in carved ball-and-claw feet. The quality of the carving throughout is outstanding.
Of particular interest is the unusual configuration of the seat frame and the positioning of the legs, which are arranged in a manner reminiscent of a corner chair, whilst the piece is conceived as a freestanding armchair.
The chair retains a glorious colour and patina throughout.
